Darmstadt is a city in the federated state of Hesse, Germany, with an estimated population of 147 150 inhabitants (430 993 in the urban area). Darmstadt's name appears for the first time at the end of the eleventh century, at that time as Darmundestat. The name derives from Darmbach, a small zigzagging stream that formerly crossed the city.
