What to see in Darmstadt

Darmstadt is a city in the federated state of Hesse, Germany, with an estimated population of 147 150 inhabitants (430 993 in the urban area). It is located about 30 km south of the center of Frankfurt of Men and 40 km from Wiesbaden. Its urban transport network consists of nine tram lines and more than twenty urban and regional bus lines. The city has a station for regional and long distance trains, and is connected to the Cercanías network of the Rin-Meno region. Darmstadt was historically an administrative center, erecting the headquarters of the former Hesse-Darmstadt Landgravate, and having developed an important industrial, scientific and educational sector from the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to housing a large number of chemical industries, among which Merck (pharmaceutical products) and Röhm (Plexiglaás) stand out, the city is the headquarters of the European Space Operations Center of the European Space Agency. Proof of his strength in the scientific field is the fact that the Darmstadtio element (atomic number 110) of the periodic table took its name in honor of the city, having been synthesized in the Gesellschaft Für Schwerioneforschung, GSI (Research Center on Research Center heavy ions) located in the Wixhausen neighborhood (northern Darmstadt).

Darmstadt is officially divided into 9 neighborhoods ('Stadtteile'). These neighborhoods are, in alphabetical order:

Darmstadt's name appears for the first time at the end of the eleventh century, at that time as Darmundestat. The name derives from Darmbach, a small zigzagging stream that formerly crossed the city. This stream, which until recent times had remained underground, is being partially discovered and recovered today to add a personality feature to the city center. The city title was granted to Darmstadt by Emperor Luis IV of Bavaria in 1330, since then belonging to the Katzenelnbogen counts. In 1422, with a sumptuous party the marriage of Felipe, son of Count Juan IV of Katzenelnbogen, the first Riesling winemaker, with Ana de Wurtemberg was held. With this union one of the richest counties was formed. Enrique III dreamed with the riches of Count Felipe de Katzenelnbogen-Diez, with the gold and silver of him, but more than anything with his wineries full of wine.
